Bioaugmentation

Bioaugmentation is the process of adding selected microbial strains or mixed cultures to biological wastewater treatment systems to improve their performance. Specifically, the main objectives of bioaugmentation technology in a Wastewater Treatment Plant are to accelerate the degradation rate of the organic load present in wastewater, increase plant’s treatment capacity, improve process response to significant fluctuations of the incoming pollutant load, enhance process resistance to inhibition due to toxic influents, liquify and eliminate the fats, improve effluent quality and the characteristics of activated sludge (e.g. settleability, activity), eliminate the odors, reduce energy consumption and reduce excess sludge production.

Alphabio has developed a series of bioaugmentation products under the trade name BIO-M, suitable for a wide range of applications in the field of both municipal and industrial wastewater treatment. The products contain microbial cultures of non-genetically modified, facultative microorganisms attached on a plant carrier. They also contain a mixture of appropriate nutrients and trace elements that are necessary for the rapid growth of the added microbial species. Bioaugmentation products are completely safe for humans and are accompanied by Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS).

The addition of bioaugmentation microorganisms is carried out at regular time intervals and in quantities in accordance to the treatment requirements (i.e., influent pollutant load, etc.) and the specific design and operating parameters of the plant. The application does not require the use of special equipment and/or the installation of new infrastructure.  For the best possible results, our company offers integrated services that, among others, include frequent monitoring and provision of technical advice for the correct application of the method.
