Τhe activated sludge process requires aeration to stimulate aerobic bacteria to feed on the organic content of the wastewater. Main byproduct of the conventional activated sludge process is excess sludge (biosolids). Representing only 1 – 2% of the influent wastewater volume, excess sludge handling and management entails approx. 40 – 50% of the total operational costs. By applying bioaugmentation significant excess sludge reduction is achieved.
