WWTP of Chania Airport, Greece

The implementation of the bioaugmentation process in the Chania city airport WWTP commenced in July of 2017. Due to long time operation malfunctions, inadequate process design (absence of denitrification reactor) as well as lack of efficient management, the plant was not able to perform effective wastewater treatment. By implementing the bioaugmentation process, COD and TSS concentrations of the plant effluent decreased by 45 and 30%, respectively, remaining in the majority of the chemical analyses below the threshold limits of relevant Greek legislation.  In addition, during the implementation, with the implementation of minor operational modifications the plant improved its TN and NH4+ removal efficiency fulfilling the effluent requirements of these parameters.
